Our dog food guide for Australia starts with age, size and activity

Pick your pet, then the question you have. Each tab covers what to look for on the pack and when to bring your vet in. The cat tabs answer how to choose cat food the same way.

Dogs: life stage

Puppies, adult dogs and older dogs eat differently. Look for the life stage on the pack, such as growth, adult or all life stages, and match it to your dog's age. Check the feeding guide for your dog's age too, as amounts often differ between puppies and adults. For older dogs, ask your vet before changing food.

Dogs: size and breed

Some foods are made for a size range, which can change kibble size and feeding amounts. Weigh your dog rather than guessing, then use that weight on the feeding guide. If you have a large breed puppy, ask your vet which growth food suits them.

Dogs: activity

A working kelpie and a dog who naps on the couch all day do not need the same amount. The feeding guide is a starting point, not a rule. You should be able to feel your dog's ribs without pressing hard. Adjust slowly, and talk to your vet before big changes.

Dogs: health needs

Sensitive tummies, itchy skin, weight and joints all lead owners to change food. A label describes what is in a food, but only your vet can say whether your dog needs a special diet. Prescription diets are fed with your vet's guidance.

Cats: life stage

How to choose cat food starts with age. Kittens, adult cats and senior cats each have life stage foods. Look for the life stage and a complete and balanced statement for cats. Food made for dogs is not made for cats, so keep their bowls apart.

When your pet's diet needs your vet, not a new bag

A label tells you what is in a food. It cannot tell you what your pet needs. These are times to book a vet visit before you change anything.
