How to compare pet insurance, one policy point at a time

To compare pet insurance well, read the same eight points in every policy document. We set them out by kind of cover, so you know what to look for before you decide.

From the start date to renewal, what each point decides

The points in the table do not all matter at once. Here is when each one comes into play over the life of a policy.

Before you start cover

Age limits decide whether your pet can be covered at all. The pre-existing conditions wording decides what is left out from day one, based on your pet's vet history.

The first weeks

Waiting periods run from the start date. A vet visit inside one may not be covered, so note each waiting period for accidents, illness and any named conditions.

At the vet

What is covered and the limits now matter. Check whether the treatment fits the policy's definitions and how much of the yearly or condition limit is left.

Making a claim

Excess and benefit percentage decide what comes back to you. Our claims guide walks through how they work together, step by step.

At renewal

Read what the document says about renewing as your pet ages, and whether any terms change. Our fine print guide explains waiting periods, exclusions and limits in more depth.

Read the PDS and the TMD before you decide

Every insurer publishes two documents for each policy. They answer different questions, and you need both to compare pet insurance properly.

Commission never decides what we include or what we say about it.
